Australians went to the polls on 26 November 2007 and elected the Labor Party to govern under Kevin Rudd. Here is the newly elected government’s view on flexibility.

Federal Labor's Policy Implementation Plan for a More Flexible Industrial Relations System

Federal Labor suggests that its fairer and more flexible industrial relations system will help to build a high-productivity, high-skill economy that can compete against the rest of the world – locking in Australia’s future economic prosperity.

According to Federal Labor, their policy implementation plan will ensure:

  • More Flexible Common Law Agreements - Workers earning $100,000 or more a year will be given the flexibility to negotiate their own employment arrangements.
  • More Flexible Awards - Employees earning less than $100,000 a year will also have flexibility through awards to bargain with their employer - but will still be protected by a strong safety net.
  • More Flexible Collective Enterprise Agreements – Genuine non-union agreements and flexibility provisions in collective agreements to enable an employer and employee to make additional arrangements on an individual level.
