The Australian Work and Life Index (AWALI): Concepts, Methodology and Rationale.
Centre for Work + Life, Hawke Research Institute for Sustainable Societies, University of South Australia.

McDonald, P., Pini, B. & Bradley, L. (2007)

The Australian Work and Life Index (AWALI) is a new work-life measure that was designed as a tool to inform the community, individuals, employers, unions and governments about the state of work-life interaction and its effects. The Centre for Work + Life plans to collect AWALI data annually.

The Index is designed to meet the requirements of policy makers and researchers. It is a short, simple and user friendly instrument that is easy to interpret. However, it is also based on careful and thorough consideration of the research literature and has a sound theoretical foundation (Pocock et al., 2007:4).

Category D in the AWALI is ‘working conditions’. Item D9 refers to work schedule flexibility and it was sourced from the UK government’s HSE Management Standards Indicator Tool (Cousins et al., 2004).
